Many parents choose to place their children in private rather than public schools. Because of the high financial demands on public education due to increasing numbers of students each year, public school districts across the country struggle with budget cuts that limit their abilities to perform as they would like to. For these reasons, private schools maintain a prestigious reputation above public schools, because it is thought that they will ultimately provide a superior education for students. However, this assumption can’t be taken at face value. Just as some public schools are impressive and others are average, the same is true of private schools. Due to the many choices of private schools in Northern Virginia, the number being over 240, a few factors to narrow down the choices are class size and budget.
Class size may be the determining factor of whether or not a student succeeds. Many private schools also offer class sizes as small as five; in this situation, the teacher acts more as a mentor to guide the students in all areas of life, as needed. In a smaller class, teachers can give individual attention and no student is allowed to slip through the cracks. Each student’s voice has an opportunity to be heard; this can make all the difference in a child’s academic career.

It’s a case of good news and bad with private school fees at the moment. Recent research by Halifax Financial Services has found that school fees in the UK have increased by 41 per cent since 2003. According to the Independent Schools Council (ISC) the average increase in member school fees was 6.2 per cent in 2007/8. In some schools, however, the increase was as much as 10 per cent, with some heads pointing to rising staff costs as the reason for the steep increase.
The credit crunch has made some headteachers apply the brakes and limit their increases so that they hover around the rate of inflation. Others are storming ahead, though, with St Paul’s School for Girls leading the pack with an increase of a 14 per cent for 2008/2009.
